Products: Disana: Nappies

The simple and natural way to use nappies

Once a baby is brought into this world, it should be cared for and made to feel as comfortable as possible. Such everyday things as clothes, which come in direct contact with a baby's delicate skin, are crucial to its comfort. For its early years, this means first and foremost the baby's nappies.

At  Disana in Germany they have spent much time with midwives and children's nurses to learn exactly what is needed to create the most comfortable and natural nappy  just for babies. The result is our Disana nappy system, they've been creating them now for over 20 years.

A baby's skin must be able to breathe. Therefore, it is essential for a nappy set to allow air to pass in and out. Yet, at the same time of course, it must adequately absorb moisture. Using pure, all-natural fibers is the best way to guarantee both these qualities. This is the very reason why Disana has chosen to use only approved untreated and all-natural organic cotton, eco merino wool and raw silk for its entire nappy set.  Disana make everything at their own factory in southern Germany.

I love these cloth nappies for the comfort & health of my baby.
Plus the gift we give our childrens future by looking after the land.

We at Organic Island Baby agree that you should try them out for  your family before ruling cloth nappies out completely
. Even if you use cloth part time 3 cloth nappies a day is 21 a week thats nearly a whole pack of disposables.

1. Disana tie-on, knit nappy
This is the actual nappy. Made of pure organic cotton, it absorbs most of the fluid and retains it inside its fibers.
2. Disana flannel liner and or muslin
Also made of organic cotton, it absorbs the remaining moisture and keeps the baby dry for a long period of time.
3. Disana paper liner
Used on top of the cotton liner, this will retain the heaviest soiling.
4. Disana knit, wool nappy cover
This provides the watertight outer covering for the nappy. Made from soft, pure eco & organic Merino sheep's wool, it absorbs without itself ever becoming wet.

A baby is changed about 4000 times - that means 4000 disposable nappies. Disana products, by contrast, last a baby's entire lifetime or longer, making them financially advantageous.

Naturally, it must be taken into consideration that our nappies must be washed, thus requiring the use of electricity, water and detergent.

Remember though, that disposable nappies use energy as well and in addition, use up non-renewable raw material. Plus, the piles of waste continue to mount.
Compare approixametely $4000 for dispoables for upto 3 years, to approixametely $1000 for cloth nappies and accessories.

Tie Knitted Organic Cotton Nappy

3 Pack -  $30

10 Pack - $90

Try It Pack - $22 (1 tie nappy + 1 brushed cotton liner + 1 flushable liner)

Excellent value, 100% pure, unbleached, knitted organic cotton, tie on nappy. For those who do not mind folding and tucking to fit perfectly no matter what baby body shape... its worth it.!

THESE ARE WHAT WE LIKE FAST DRYING, AFFORDABLE, NATURAL & BREATHABLE.

They can be used on there own for newborns with the flushable liners or used with organic cotton muslins and the brushed organic cotton, or shaped liners for heavier wetters. They are a one size nappy so can be used till potty training, thats great news so its only one investment.

These nappies are proving very popular and we have had positive comments about fit, ease of washing and how well they wear. The ties are stretchy, so are comfortable around baby's tummy and sit higher on babies back to help prevent leaks.  Plus the nappy doesn't cut into the babies crutch but wraps around the tops of the thighs for comfort and helps prevent leaks. My baby loves them, because they're knitted organic cotton they move with her, fitting firmly and comfortably!
As your baby grows and becomes a heavier wetter just add more liners and muslins or any nappy squares or liners if you so choose thats we love about them!!!

Important

Brand new nappies and liners need to be washed 2-3 times before use to ensure maximum absorbency. Both nappies and liners should be washed after each use. Simply place the items in a washing bag and put in the washing machine. This bag makes it not only easy to handle the nappies but also helps prevent the drawstrings from knotting during washing.

If you don't use washing bags you can tie the ties togeather to prevent knots, or put them on a low spin cycle. Washable at up to 90 degrees and tumble dryable. Line dry very fast, especailly indoors or out on a simple small line dryer. Replacement ties are available, however have not had any complaints.

Directions for use

Step 1

The disana nappy is very easy to use. Spread out the tie-on, knit nappy on the changing mat. Slightly, fold down the rear flap. Now place the flannel liner in the centre of the nappy.

Step 2

Lay the baby on the nappy. First, pull up and place the liner between the legs and fold the edges towards the middle.

Step 3

Then pull up the lower flap of the nappy between the legs and over the waist, by folding the flap, you can adjust the size of the nappy

Step 4

.Lastly, cross the ties of the knit nappy across the baby's back, and bring them round to the front and tie in a bow.

Step 3

The knitting gives the nappy a comfortable elasticity so that it fits snugly. The baby is not restricted, but wrapped gently enough with plenty of room to move.

Step 5

The Disana knit; wool nappy cover is then pulled over the tie-on nappy. While watertight, the cover allows the air to pass. The soft ribbing around the waist and legs hold the nappy cover securely and gently in place. Due to the temperature balancing qualities of wool, the baby is kept warm without getting too hot.

Pull-On Eco & Organic Merino Wool Over Pants

These are beautifully made with a double layer of knitted eco & organic merino wool which means they never leak, and so absorbant through the night

Wool is breathable and virtually never leaks, is naturally antibacterial so doesn't retain odours, is untreated so is wonderfully soft too. This style has been loved for generations because it is so effective and is very popular in Europe. The knit stretches for a gentle and comfortable fit over a very wide size range. Hand wash every 7-10 days (I know some Mums including myself who wash hers every 3-6 wks in a rotation of 3 others. So there is a lot of room to manoeuvre here) and re-lanolise after every wash.

When soiled its best to simply wash the area stained by hand with wool wash or a natural olive soap. Pre lanolised aready to go.

10 Pack -$90

Very good quality, soft and hard wearing muslins, made of 100% Organic Cotton, These are the more generous 80cm squares, very absorbent. 8 layers when folded in the tie nappy and useful as newborn nappies.

Perfect for nappy liner and mopping up spills or burping and change cloths. In a lovely waffle weave were one of my favourite items with my babies, and gets softer with every wash.

Highly recommended for night and heavier wetters as they're very absorbant. The great thing is the tie nappy can cope with as many muslins to boost the absobancy as you need. We often used 1muslin and 2 brushed cotton liners.

Don't forget the teether's need to chew on a piece of apple or pear and don't want to be chocking. Cut a piece of muslin and tie up the fruit inside. The baby will be entertained and enjoy the flavour and you'll feel they're safe.

Recipe for Homemade Wipe Solution

Bought wipes are handy (we have to be honest, here!) but they are packed with chemicals, they fill up landfill sites and they are expensive!

We have the solution (!) -

Water, some baby wash (optional), some base oil (almond, coconut, avocado, wheat germ, peach, olive or apricot, for example), a few drops of lavender and/or tea tree essential oil and voila! Shake well before use put in small spray bottle or shampoo bottle.
